Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
My capstone project is going to two 6th grade classes in Naylor School located in Hartford. During these gatherings, I will be teaching the students about pulmonary hypertension, along with character education. I chose pulmonary hypertension because two years ago, my cousin Sejla died from it. I also chose to do character education because I feel like middle school students need it, and I will also tie it to the fact that Sejla was a wonderful person/ character. These meetings will be at Naylor because it is where my cousin and I both went and it hits close to home. Naylor is full of teachers that taught Sejla and I, and are familiar with what Sejla went through. I will start off with the basics, and then share a personal story with them. After teaching them about the disease, character education, and sharing my personal story, I will come up with activities to collect money and end up having something to hold Sejla’s memory forever. The memory I plan on doing is a garden with students in the spring time, or a plaque in the main office of the school to honor her.
My essential research question is how does premature death and/or serious illnesses in children affect their peers psychologically, mentally, and socially? This question relates to my project because I will be teaching 6th grade students about a premature death with a student. I chose to research this because I want to find out how students are affected by a classmates death and if it changes their perspectives on life. The artifacts I will be collecting throughout are pictures, donations (from dress downs, bake sales, etc.), emails, lesson plans, power points, and student work.
My mentor is my former 6th grade teacher, Joseph Fuller. He is qualified to be my mentor because he used to be my teacher and knows the situation that I dealt with with my cousin. I talked to him about my plan and he has already talked to the principal and the other teachers, and they are all on board. My learning stretch about this project is going to be me teaching others, but also teaching myself how to share my personal story in front of a large group of people. Another stretch will be finding activities to do with the students and how I will present it to them. My last learning stretch will be collecting money to purchase Sejla's memory plaque or garden.
Sincerely,
Mirhada Kuljancic
